Activities and Responsibilities

Publow-with-Pensford is a civil parish situated within the unitary local authority of Bath and North East Somerset and within the parliamentary constituency of North East Somerset and Hanham. It comprises the villages of Belluton  Pensford  Publow and Woollard. Pensford stands on the site of the most important Northern Somerset textile market of the 14th and 15th Centuries

Publow with Pensford Parish Council, is involved with many aspects of life in our villages. It has the right to be consulted on planning decisions affecting the Parish. We are consulted by our Local Authority on planning applications, highway improvements, parking and many other matters of concern to our local community.

We are involved with the provision and upkeep of certain local facilities such as public footpaths, the village green, allotments, some public seats and litter bins. Conservation matters (including trees and listed buildings) and environmental issues are also of interest to the Council.

The Parish Council will liaise with the district council on the maintenance, repair and improvement of highways, drainage, footpaths, public transport and street cleaning and it works with local police and other external groups on various matters.

The Parish Council holds monthly public meetings, during which councillors consider local planning applications and other matters of local concern.

In each financial year the Parish Council is required to agree an annual precept to cover its operating costs and to produce annual audited accounts for public scrutiny.

The Parish Council works hard for the local community and it acts as a channel of local opinion to larger local government bodies. Delegated members attend Liaison Meetings with our Local Authority and we also actively participate in various other local forums

The Parish Council is the trustee of the land on which the Memorial Hall and Sportsground stands. However, the Parish Council has no role with regard to management of the Memorial Hall and Sportsground, control of which is vested in a separate Hall Committee.

Parish Councils have general powers to provide community transport (such as a minibus), crime prevention measures (such as CCTV) and to contribute money towards traffic calming schemes. They also have the powers to consider giving grants to local voluntary organisations, and to sponsor public events.

Publow with Pensford Parish Council provides this website so that everyone in the area can have easy access to local news and matters of interest to our local community.

To raise any matters of concern with the Parish Council, you may:

  • attend any council meeting. You will be invited to speak at the meeting (see above)

Minutes of Parish Council meetings are published on this website and on the Parish Council noticeboards outside the Pensford Miners Welfare Institute and at Woollard Bridge.
