- Monday 6th October: “Conclusion of Hydrology and Hydraulics Research Project into the 1968 flood of the River Chew” – Academics from the Universities of Bath and Greenwich will join us to present a summary of their findings, highlighting the innovative methods they used to assess the magnitude and impact of this historic flood. Some of you may remember attending the workshop in September 2023. Since then, the research team has made significant progress, combining diverse historical data sources with advanced hydraulic modelling techniques. Their work has not only provided fresh insight into the 1968 flood but has also improved understanding of flood risks nationally. Importantly, this project has resulted in the development of a new methodological framework for reconstructing historical flash flood events. This blueprint is designed to be replicated in other regions, offering a valuable tool for improving flood preparedness and designing effective mitigation strategies.
